Team Semester Project (Fall 2004)

Purpose: To gain an understanding of the systems analyst approach to solving business problems in a hands on project with a focus on the planning phase of systems analysis with emphasis on traditional and object oriented processes.

Facts About the Project:

Project Title: Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company System

System Description:

The Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company System is an old-fashioned family run manufacturing company that is striving to grow in the industry.
They have a good cash flow and are capable of growth.
Currently, they have the products available in a mail order catalog.
Individuals that need machine parts look in the catalog, dial a phone number and give the listed product number to order products.
Potential buyers, both individual and small businesses, look in the catalog and order the products.

Problem Defined:

More modern manufacturing companies have their own web sites that display their products for sale in addition to using mail order catalogs. This competition is eating into the profits of Yo-Yo manufacturing because potential customers are accessing individual manufacturing companies’ web sites before looking at the catalogs. Therefore, Yo-Yo Manufacturing has decided that they need to furnish pictures of the machine parts they have for sale in a database that will be accessed via their own web site. In addition, the web site will allow you to contact Yo-Yo manufacturing directly to ask questions.

Assumptions:

Yo-Yo Manufacturing is loosing money because they do not have their own web site.
Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company System needs to advertise their new web site so that customers access their web site before their competition.

Deliverables for this project:

General Notes:

· All work should be done on the laptop using word, no hand written documents. A narrative that explains your diagrams and assumptions should accompany diagrams.

Narratives should be done in block paragraphs presented in a neat organized fashion with proper grammar and spelling.
Utilize the information above to produce the following deliverables for the Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company system.
Remember your analysis and deliverables should reflect your understanding of the project and should convey your approach to the project to your stakeholders.
Maintain your work in a notebook with an index as the first page and the second and third pages should be a printout of this entire document.

Deliverables:

Construct a Cost Benefit Analysis Table using the figures from page 602 or make up your own figures for the table. The table should reflect a 5-year analysis. (text example Chapter 2, page 49)

For the Traditional approach produce the following:

Context Diagram (text example Ch 2, pg 50)
A DFD Diagram (text example Ch 3, pg 82)
An Entity relationship diagram (text example Ch 5, pg 172-175)

Produce a Structure Chart (text example Chapter 3, page 80)
Produce a table showing Events and Event Table (text example Chapter 5, page 141)
For the Object-oriented approach produce the following:

Class Diagrams of system (text examples Ch 3, pg 86; Ch 5, pg )
A Use Case Diagram (text examples pages Chapter 7, 223-226)

Produce a Application Architecture Plan

This plan should detail the technology used in developing the application (programming languages)
