- April 18, 2012
Write up the slides for the "meat" of your
presentation, i.e., the most important slides of your talk the
content of which you would like the audience to really walk away
with. Email these slides to
Dr.
Bailey before lecture starts Wednesday, April 18. We
will pick a few at random to give a short presentation.
- April 11, 2012
Using our discussion from April 4 on Beamer.
Start to outline (with \section, \subsection in the beamer
class) your presentation you will give on April 28. You
will give a short presentation summarizing this outline.
- March 28, 2012
Using our discussion from March 21, prepare a 5 minute
presentation of another (maybe more "difficult"?) theorem.
Make sure you send any digital presentations to
Dr. Williams.
- March 21, 2012
Prepare a 5 minute presentation of your favorite
theorem.
- March 14, 2012
Compile a list of all your references for your Capstone
project (i.e., every reference which will appear in your
bibliography).
- February 8, 2012
Write an abstract for this articles Stirred, Not
Shaken, by Stirling's Formula and Equal Area World
Maps: A Case Study in LaTeX. Do not look up the
abstracts online, try to create the abstract by yourself using
the concepts discussed in lecture. Email these to
Dr. Williams.
- February 1, 2012
Create a folder in your LaTeX tutorials folder called
"Template 2"; Create a new file LastName-Template-2.tex
and save it in the Template 2 folder.
Recreate this file. Certain aspects should be changed to reflect your project, e.g., the title, you and your advisor’s names and e-mail addresses, your subject classification(s), and key words and phrases.
You may need to search the internet for information about certain aspects of this assignment. In particular, you will need
to: create the abstract; create subsections (don’t forget the labels!); italicize words;
create the references section. Note. For the abstract and references
sections there are special commands (not just unnumbered sections).
Can you find the command that typesets LaTeX in that funny way?
- January 25, 2012
Find the
AMS classification code(s) of your Capstone project (there
may be multiple codes which will work).
Update your paper with the AMS codes you found, and email the
result to
Dr. Raridan.
NOTE: The Proficiency Profile is being given on February 1
during regular class time. However, it will not be held in
the normal lecture room. You should report to the testing
center in the basement of the Library behind the CAS.
- January 18, 2012
Make sure you have a LaTeX installation is on your
computer.
Use what you know about LaTeX so far to type a five (5)
paragraph essay, each with at least three (3) sentences but no
more than five, about a famous late mathematician.
The first paragraph should provide an introduction to who you
are going to write about, and what you are going to say; the
second paragraph should address their early life; the third
paragraph should address their mathematical interests and/or
achievements; the fourth paragraph should address the
circumstances of their death; the fifth should provide a summary
of the "high points" you presented in the paper, that is,
provide concluding remarks.
Name the file mathematicianFirstName-mathematicianLastName-YourLastName.tex
and send both the *.tex and *.pdf files to
Dr. Raridan.
- January 11, 2012
Find three articles (or a print-out of the ILL request
if they haven't arrived before next week) relevant to your
Capstone Project. These should be sources that will appear
in your bibliography of your final paper. E-mail these to
Dr. Williams.
