Computer Science @ CSU

Starting last Fall, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The program is unique in that it emphasizes computer gaming, though it  incorporates enough flexibility that students can specialize in areas of database, computer graphics, networking, algorithms, game design, and operating systems.

CIMS was established in 1998 and is an academic unit within Clayton State University. It is housed in the James Baker University Center, which contains high-speed internet, model classrooms and a variety of laboratories with cutting-edge technology. Our faculty are active researchers and collectively have expertise in broad range of areas within computer science.

The program is driven by the following learning objectives. Students should:

  1. Be able to solve complex and significant problems with professional skill by formulating efficient and effective algorithmic solutions to a wide variety of sophisticated problems normally encountered in industry and in academe.
  2. Be able to express algorithms clearly and correctly in a variety of programming languages.
  3. Be able to demonstrate sufficient foundational knowledge of the following subject areas of computer science:  operating systems, databases, networks, graphics, software engineering, game design and implementation, and web technologies.
  4. Have an understanding of ethical responsibilities related to the areas of computing and the workplace.
  5. Have mastery of the theoretical underpinnings of Computer Science
  6. Apply breadth of computer science knowledge to either post-baccalaureate study or a career field.
