Introductory Statistics, MATH 1231

Online Section

Summer Semester, 2010

Instructor: Dr. Catherine Matos

This is an online course, which means it meets ONLINE, except for a few on campus meetings for tests.

The REQUIRED meetings for the class are:

Orientation: May 25, 9pm-11pm, Room TBA

                Test 1: June 17, 9pm-11pm, Room TBA

                Test 2: July 16, 9pm-11pm, Room TBA

Final Exam: July 29, 9pm-11pm, Room TBA

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING MATH 1231 IN THE ONLINE FORMAT, YOU MUST APPLY FOR DEPARTMENT APPROVAL.  It's unlikely that you will be approved unless you have successfully completed (A, B, or C) other college courses ONLINE and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  After reading all materials here, fill out the form (found on the next page).  If you are approved and you decide to enroll, you are responsible for setting up your CSU email by the first day of CSU classes (not the Orientation meeting -- you need your email working  before then).  I will send at least 2 emails to the class list before the drop/add period ends.  You MUST read these emails (and do some work) BEFORE YOU ATTEND THE ORIENTATION

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "Great! I don't have to attend class, so this will be a piece of cake!"  This mindset, however, is a grave mistake for this class.

Why do you need to seriously consider whether or not you should take the online stat class?

Since it meets only virtually, there is NO traditional lecture time. There will be NO spoon-feeding in this course. That means that the burden of learning and studying falls on you much more than it would in a traditional on-campus course. You will have to actually READ THE BOOK (some chapters more than a few times), go through the StatsPortal activities (applets, StatsTutor, etc), work the homework problems both in the textbook and StatsPortal, and participate in on-line discussions and assignments.

How will the class work?

You will have homework assignments due in StatsPortal about 2-3 times a week. We will be covering approximately 3 chapters in the textbook each week. You will be required to participate in discussions and on-line assignments several times each week about various concepts from the course through StatsPortal, and take weekly quizzes to assess your progress.

If you are not good at learning from a textbook, and using support materials (online notes, applets, activities and Powerpoints), you will not do well in this course. If you tend to procrastinate, you will not do well in this course. In spite of the lack of traditional in-class coverage of all topics, you will still be responsible for knowing ALL the required topics as posted on the Math 1231 Departmental website.

If you are not self-motivated, this class is likely not the right class for you. If the information above makes you nervous or scared, or if you prefer a lot of class discussions and explanations, please enroll in a traditional Math 1231 section that meets 3 hours a week. DO NOT stay in this class simply because there are not any other sections open. We will get you in a section that works with your schedule if you decide this is not the right type of course for you.

Now, let's continue on to the Math 1231 online website.....
