Introductory Statistics, MATH 1231

Hybrid Section (partially online)

Description: C:\Catherine\Clayton\CSU website\_themes\blueprnt\bluhorsa.gif

Spring Semester, 2012

Instructor: Dr. Catherine Matos

This is a hybrid course, which means it meets only half the time of a traditional 3 credit course. One section will meet on Tuesdays 2:10-3:25 pm. The other section will meet on Tuesday 5:00-6:15pm.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "Great! I only have to act like I'm paying attention half the time! This will be a piece of cake!"  This mindset, however, is a grave mistake for this class.

Why do you need to seriously consider whether or not you should take the hybrid stat class?

Since it meets only half the time, there is NOT time to teach the entire course during class time. There will be NO spoon-feeding in this course. That means that the burden of learning and studying falls on you much more than it would in a traditional on-campus course. You will have to actually READ THE BOOK (some chapters more than a few times), work the homework problems, and participate in on-line discussions.

How will the class work?

Before each class, you should READ the chapters that will be covered in class. You will then complete an assigned Pre-test on each chapter. This means you must teach yourself, using the textbook and other supporting resources, BEFORE coming to class. Additional video lectures will be assigned frequently as well.

Class time will be used primarily to work problems and answers questions. I will assume that you have studied before attending class. It is impossible to cover all the material in half of the normal class time, so it is imperative that you come to class prepared, having read the chapters assigned the previous week and done the homework problems.

Additionally, you will be required to participate in on-line discussions and activities about various concepts from the course, through StatsPortal.

If you are completely unprepared for class, most likely you will not understand what is covered during class. Additionally, due to the time constraints, many explanations of content will NOT be delivered AT ALL. In spite of the lack of class coverage of all topics, you will still be responsible for knowing ALL the required topics as posted on the Math 1231 Departmental website.

If you are not self-motivated, this class is likely not the right class for you. If the information above makes you nervous or scared, or if you prefer a lot of class discussions and explanations, please enroll in a traditional Math 1231 section that meets 3 hours a week. DO NOT stay in this class simply because there are not any other sections open. We will get you in a section that works with your schedule if you decide this is not the right type of course for you.

Now, let's continue on to the Math 1231 Hybrid website.....
