General Information
The College for Information and Mathematical Sciences is
designed to offer or coordinate academic programming that is
especially responsive to Clayton State University’s core mission of preparing students to succeed in
the world of work in the 21st Century. The College is responsible
for direct administration or interdisciplinary coordination for
the following programs of study: InformationTechnology Career
Ladder. A laddered program that prepares graduates to enter the
burgeoning Information Technology field at three
levels:Certificate in Information Technology(C.I.T.)
Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology (A.A.S.I.T.)
Bachelor of Information Technology(B.I.T.). The laddered program
has been changed, however, to two levels which only allow new
students to enroll at the associate or bachelor level.
The Information Technology Career Ladder (ITCL) is unique to Clayton State University
and one of the first of its kind in the country. Responding to the
critical shortage of IT professionals in industry, the ITCL
integrates Georgia core curriculum while allowing students to gain
essential IT skills. Students may earn a Certificate
in Information Technology in one year by combining IT
Foundations and Skills with a selection of Georgia core classes.
Students may choose to enter the workforce with their acquired IT
skills or proceed to the Associate level. Unfortunately, we
are no longer accepting new students for the Certificate program.
The Associate of Applied Science in
Information Technology accepts all courses earned in the
Certificate, combines them with additional IT Foundations and
Skills courses and additional Georgia core classes to add another
layer of expertise. Additionally, students are required to
complete an internship in the IT industry. This program blends
academics with practical skills and job experience to produce well
qualified IT professionals. Again, students may choose to enter
the workforce or proceed to the Bachelor level.
The Bachelor of InformationTechnology accepts
all courses earned in the Certificate and Associate programs, adds
the last of the Georgia core classes, a final set of IT
Foundations and provides a concentration of courses in a specific
IT specialty. Students are required to create and maintain a
portfolio to document the major projects of their senior year and
to participate in an IT industry Cooperative Education experience.
The Minor in InformationTechnology will help
to prepare students for careers in business and the sciences where
a deeper understanding of Information Technology would provide a
benefit beyond the normal coursework in their major. For the
sciences (Track 1) a foundation in object oriented programming is
provided along with an in-depth understanding of computing
architectures and operating systems. Track 1 provides grounding in
testing and quality assurance. For business (Track 2) the
foundations of information technology and an introduction to
programming augment the advanced applications knowledge that is
already part of the business curriculum. Further, Track 2 provides
grounding in project management, especially in managing
information technology projects. Track 2 includes an in-depth
study of systems analysis and design with an emphasis on
developing and maintaining secure systems.
The WebBSIT
is a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree offered
online via the internet. It is a collaborative project of
five University System of Georgia colleges and Universities.
The WebBSIT program reflects the same academic standards of
Clayton State University’s Bachelor of Information Technology while affording the
convenience and flexibility of on-line learning. Graduates will be
prepared to design and develop effective, IT-based solutions and
integrate them into individual and organizational environments.
